How to Capture Streaming Video
Video has long been streamed in several different formats, but historically users have had no need or interest to get involved with the technical details. They just login and watch - and the host site handles the technicalities.
Streaming is the way in which the video is sent. It is hosted remotely and sent between the supplier and the recipient in a continuous, real-time manner. The information is being sent on a constant basis so that the viewer can access it whenever they want for instant viewing. Provided there is sufficient bandwith and reasonable buffering capacity, the fact that the video data is hosted remotely is not an issue, and viewing is seamless.
On the internet, there are a number of ways to capture and record streaming video content - for local storage and repeat viewing. One of the simplest ways is via a software program that records the streaming video as it is downloaded for viewing from the internet - effectively, a "software" video recorder.
Sometimes, the host site offers an option to download the streaming video as a file designed for retention and subsequent viewing. Another option is that a clickable link ("hyperlink") to the streaming video will be offered, which can be posted or embedded in blogs, forums, communities and private websites to make the streaming video content conveniently accessible to visitors.
However, the internet is not the only forum through which streaming video is offered. One of the first venues to offer streaming video was the television. Television channels are offering streaming video content virtually 24/7 - although any given program is only available at its scheduled time. Many viewers are set up to capture and record this type of streaming video via hardware such as the Video Cassette Recorder ("VCR") or Digital Video Disk Recorder ("DVD Recorder").
Many DVD players now offer the option to record the video on an internal hard disk and to subsequenly burn it on optical disc media by laser. In both of these cases, it is possible to transfer the captured video, by physical transfer of the removable cassette or DVD.
Capturing streaming video to physical media in this way is vital to many users because it allows them to save and transfer various kinds information in a very simple and convenient way. A notable example is the use of surveillance video for solving crime and prosecuting offenders.
In order for our society to grow and develop, we need to rapidly and conveniently share information and ideas. Streaming video is an effective medium for such exchange. Information in the form of streaming video can be readily captured and shared by news stations and individuals alike, and can be used in myriad personal and professional applications.
